Where to Bet on the Golden Slipper Race

When it comes to betting on the Golden Slipper, only the best bookies operating over the internet in Australia will do. This important race that ties juvenile form together from various states and territories within the country is both informative and fascinating from a gambling perspective. As a bettor, you need the sportsbook that you wager on to reflect that in the horse racing odds on offer for the Golden Slipper Stakes right now.

Through Wetten.com, you can compare all the best betting sites for horse racing Australia has to offer and see which come recommended by our experts. They have conducted in-depth bookmaker reviews, both for betting services localised to the Australia region and big international operators including world-famous sports betting exchange Betfair who also have a presence in the area.

These tell you how such sportsbooks perform – not just for horse racing, but based on their entire gambling product and experience as a whole. The experts we use are bettors themselves, so that gives real authenticity to our reviews which you can read right now! Other areas such as customer service, the mobile betting provision and security are areas of interest, besides the quality of odds and number of sports and markets you can wager on.

What has all this to do with the Golden Slipper race, we hear you ask? Well, it is about the bigger picture that sits behind a specific event like this famous horse race. Top-quality bookmakers take care of the main things, and then the little things take care of themselves. What Sites with Golden Slipper Betting Should Offer

With a race as prestigious as the Golden Slipper, there are certain things you should come to expect from online bookmakers operating in Australia. While gambling laws in the various states of this country have strict rules about what can and can’t be advertised, it may just be a case of logging into your sportsbook account to see what is on offer. There are sure to be promotions on a big horse racing event like this one along with all other prestigious events, like betting on Oscars. The bookies aren’t hiding them on purpose, they are only complying with the rules. With that in mind, here are some things to look out for when betting on the Golden Slipper race when its on:

Best Prices

Something that everybody wants is high odds and the most competitive prices possible. The Golden Slipper Stakes is one leg of Australian thoroughbred horse racing’s Two-Year-Old Triple Crown after all. There are bound to be some of the top juveniles trained in the country descending on Rosehill Gardens to take their chance in this big event. The Golden Slipper race, as you will see below, is a historic and significant part of the sport in Australia.

Extra Places

In 2020, there were 16 Golden Slipper runners competing on the track. Getting standard place terms with such a large field lining up feels a little stingy. The top sportsbooks in Australia offering betting on the Golden Slipper should be offering extra places on the race. After all, the prize money for competing horses will go down to fourth and fifth place, and maybe beyond, so it’s only fair that you have that reflected in any place betting you do.

What is the Golden Slipper Stakes?

The Golden Slipper Stakes is a 1,200m Group 1 juvenile thoroughbred Flat race held at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse in Sydney. Open to two-year-olds only using the Southern Hemisphere classification, it is the premier sprint contest for horses of that age bracket in Australia. It is also the most valuable race of its kind in the world and had a total prize purse of $3,500,000 in 2020.

There are set weights for horses to carry in the Golden Slipper race based on their gender. Colts and geldings are allotted 56½ kg, while mares receive a 2kg sex allownace meaning they have 54½ kg on their backs. This race is run on turf. The Golden Slipper date has changed over the years, and this is to do with when the Easter Holidays fall.

There are other important horse races held around Australia at that time, so the Golden Slipper Stakes moves to fit in with that. Unless Easter falls early, then it is run beforehand. Throughout its history, the Golden Slipper date has always been between mid-March and mid-April making it a key part of the autumn program in Australia. Trainers will spend most of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer months preparing their horses to run in it.

History of the Golden Slipper

The Golden Slipper Stakes was inaugurated in 1957. Organised today by the Australian Turf Club (ATC), it was a creation of the Sydney Turf Club (STC) and one of its founders, George Ryder. When his wife asked him what the perfect present for a two-year-old Flat thoroughbred was, a Golden Slipper was his reply. And so the name stuck.

An eight-length win for Todman in the first-ever running of the Golden Slipper race helped to establish it as part of the juvenile program in Australia. That horse went on to win the Champagne Stakes at Royal Randwick and the Canterbury Guineas (now the Randwick Guineas) across Sydney later in 1957. Todman also took the 1960 Lightning Stakes at Flemington in Melbourne later in his career.

By the late 1960s, the Golden Slipper Stakes was attracting serious interstate competition within Australia. The 1969 edition saw Vain, the sprinter based in Victoria, challenge New South Wales’ Special Girl and come out on top with a four-length victory. That was the first time that the Golden Slipper had gone to a horse trained in Victoria.

When Australian horse races were reclassified in 1979, the authorities had absolutely no hesitation in making the Golden Slipper Stakes a Group 1 event. Prize money for the race topped $1,000,000 come 1986 and, although the 1990s were lean years, this century has seen some remarkable feats. Chief among them was Gai Waterhouse training the first three home in the 2001 Golden Slipper race with Ha Ha leading her runners home.

Golden Slipper Past Winners

A significant number of Golden Slipper past winners have been fillies. This is because of the 2kg sex allowance they receive from colts and geldings as laid down in the terms of the race. Gai Waterhouse is the most successful trainer in the history of the Golden Slipper race after saddling seven horses to victory at Rosehill Gardens. Here is a list of previous winners:

Golden Slipper Stakes FAQs

📅 What date is the Golden Slipper?

Important events for horse betting in Australia like the Golden Slipper have set dates within the annual calendar. As this particular event is an age-restricted race for Flat thoroughbred racehorses aged two using the Southern Hemisphere classification, it is important that the action takes place within a set window as part of the pattern. The precise date of all Group 1 races anywhere in the world will vary from one season and year to the next. That is very much the case with the Golden Slipper Stakes too.

🏇 Who won the Golden Slipper in 2020?

All horse races have winners and losers. In this, the Golden Slipper is no exception. It is not possible for the same horse to win this race more than once. That is because the Golden Slipper Stakes is an age-restricted race for horses classified as two-year-olds in the Southern Hemisphere. Who wins it year to year is not as important as finding useful horse racing betting tips for Australia that pick out the victorious horse.

💰 How much is the Golden Slipper worth?

The prize money attached to famous horse races like the Golden Slipper usually only goes one way, and that’s up year on year. As a Group 1 horse race, there is a certain prestige and history behind this event that influences how much first place is worth. Winners of horse races like the Golden Slipper Stakes always get the lion’s share of prize money on offer. It’s only fair, if the horse is victorious. The best horse racing betting apps will tell you how much first place is worth on their mobile racecards.

👡 Why is it called the Golden Slipper?

There are some funny stories behind the names of certain horse races. Some are because of famous racehorses, while others relate to geography such as the Melbourne Cup, and a few – like the Golden Slipper – have other reasons. Particular horse races are memorable because of their titles. In an age where sponsorship plays havoc with the names of equine events, it is good to see the familiar feature contests such as the Golden Slipper Stakes being run under what they are best known as.

🕒 What time is the Golden Slipper run?

You will find that the exact post times of horse races, even big ones like the Golden Slipper, do vary slightly from one year to the next to fit in with TV coverage around Australia and the globe. This is also the case with the dates on which races are run. In terms of precise timings, the Golden Slipper Stakes is the feature Group 1 race on the card from Rosehill Gardens in Sydney. Like the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Royal Randwick across town later in the season, the scheduled off time is subject to change.
