What Sites with Queen Elizabeth Stakes Betting Should Offer

When it comes to betting on the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia, there are certain things that you can expect from a sportsbook. We’re not talking about just the odds here. This is one of the biggest horse races in the country, after all. Every betting site in Australia is going to have prices available, so what does best in class look like? Let’s take a look:

Futures Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting

Sometimes called ante post, futures betting is particularly important with the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick, simply because of the way that horses qualify for the race. With ballot exemption events being run beforehand, that makes for a lively market. Bookmakers will cut the odds for any horse who is victorious in these “win and you’re in” races. This is because they are guaranteed runners if fit. The fact that there is a program like this built up around the race naturally lends itself to sportsbooks offering future Queen Elizabeth Stakes betting from November through until final scratchings.

Extra Places

Fixed odds bookmakers should also provide you with extra places on the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, especially if a large field of runners is declared. In a race as competitive as this where there can also be international interest in it, this makes sense. While this isn’t a handicap, it is a showpiece race, and such events should be treated generously by the bookies. Extra place may mean a smaller fraction of outright horse racing betting odds for the place part of each-way bets, but this is a compromise many bettors are prepared to make for the insurance of enhanced place terms. Lookout for any bookmakers paying four places instead of three on the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia.

What is the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick?

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes is a Group 1 weight for age thoroughbred Flat turf horse race run at Royal Randwick Racecourse in the suburbs of Sydney. Held during the Southern Hemisphere’s autumn, its current distance is 2,000m. Now the richest horse race in terms of prize money with a total purse of A$4,000,000, it has a rich history and illustrious roll of honour.

The Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia is the culmination of the ATC Championships Series for middle-distance Flat turf racehorses. Those who win key trials prior to it can book their spot in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes by getting a ballot exemption. Only the Cox Plate and The Everest are more valuable weight for age horse races run in the country.

Open to horses aged three and up, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick have terms which favour the younger horses. This is consistent with and reflected in pattern and Group races worldwide. The reason for three-year-olds carrying less weight than their elders is because they are not as physically developed. In order to offset such physiological disadvantages, they thus have a lighter burden on board. Fillies and mares will also benefit from a sex allowance from colts and geldings.

Queen Elizabeth Stakes winners usually have a combination of speed and stamina. This race is more demanding than a sprint, but not as far as the Australian Derby or staying races like the Melbourne Cup or Sydney Cup. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes, organised by the Australian Turf Club, should not be confused with the Victoria Racing Club’s Group 3 event of the same name run as a handicap at Flemington over 2,600m during the Spring Carnival.

Ballot Exemptions for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes

There are currently six races held in the Sydney area which carry ballot exemptions for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia for the winners. They are as follows:

  • Epsom Handicap (Group 1), 1,600m, Randwick, previous October
  • The Metropolitan Handicap (Group 1), 2,400m, Randwick, previous October
  • Ranvet Stakes (Group 1), 2,000m, Rosehill Gardens, March
  • Tancred Stakes (Group 1), 2,400m, Rosehill Gardens, March
  • Doncaster Mile Handicap (Group 1), 1,600m, Randwick, Easter
  • Australian Derby (Group 1), 2,400m, Randwick, Easter

Three of these are handicaps open to horses aged three and above using the Southern Hemisphere classification. There are also two weight for age contests, open to the same horses where the terms favour three-year-olds. The Australian Derby, meanwhile, is an age-restricted race. These are key trials for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick and that is why they were chosen by the Australian Turf Club (ATC) who organise all the events for ballot exemptions.

It is notable that half of the ballot exemption races for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes are over longer distances. Only the Ranvet Stakes is a win and you’re in event for this at the same trip. The beauty of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia is that it puts horses who are strong staying milers against genuine middle-distance thoroughbreds.

History of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia

Founded as the Queen’s Plate in 1851, the Queen Elizabeth Stakes was first named for Queen Victoria. In 1873, however, it became known as the Australian Jockey Club Plate. Other than 1928 and 1934 when it was run as the AJC Kings Cup, it adopted its current title in 1954.

There is a history of multiple Queen Elizabeth Stakes winners with 18 horses triumphing more than once. With a dozen two-time victories and six enjoying three successes in the race, the feat of repeating in the race has become rarer in modern times. Legendary mare Winx was the latest three-time winner of the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Randwick with a hat-trick in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Queen Elizabeth Stakes winners have had to run over shorter distances as the race grew in size and stature. Originally contested over about three miles (roughly 4,800m), it was trialled as a mile-and-a-half event in 1914. From 1923, it was cut to two-and-a-quarter miles (3,600m), then one-and-three-quarter miles (2,800m) first in 1944 and again in 1955. In 1973 up until 1985, they settled on 2,400m but from 1986 to the present, it was down to 2,000m (about a mile-and-a-quarter).

The race distance is almost 60 per cent shorter than it used to be, so the Queen Elizabeth Stakes in Australia has transformed from a stayers’ event to a middle-distance contest. That is reflected in its roll of honour with famous past winners from its early history having much greater stamina than modern heroes.
