Beginner’s Guide to Teaser Betting Bets

For at least the last decade, it was almost impossible to browse a sports betting forum without seeing the words “sports betting teaser”. Despite sports betting teasers being prevalent online, most people don’t know what a sports betting teaser is.

Read on to find out what a teaser betting bet is, and how to calculate your odds of winning a teaser. If reading about teasers doesn’t quite tickle your fancy, then maybe consider reading about other types of bets and parlays in the US sports betting guide. Let’s dive into what a sports betting tease is

What is a teaser betting bet? Teaser betting explained!

So, what is a sports betting teaser? A sports betting teaser is a parlay that uses a modified point spread. So essentially a type of bet that allows the bettor to combine bets on two different games or outcomes. The bettor can adjust the point spreads for the two games to increase his chances of a win but will enjoy a much smaller pay out when he does win.

So how does a teaser bet work? As an example, let’s say that there are three bets you like, A -7.5, B +1.5 and C +5.5. While you could bet these straight or in a parlay, your other option is to make a three team six-point sports betting teaser bet of A -1.5, B +7.5 and C +11.5. To win the bet you will need all three teams need to cover – cover is another word for win. On most betting sites, a winning three team sports betting teaser pays out 1.8 to 1.

Sports betting teasers are most commonly found in basketball and football, although it is also prevalent throughout the rest of sports betting too. Sports betting teasers are multi-team wagers, meaning that a bettor must choose a minimum of two teams up. Bettors can choose more teams however and in some cases they will choose up to 15 teams. The bettor will get a certain number of points that they can add or subtract to the point spread to help improve their odds of winning.

There are different types of teasers. The first kind is called a “super teaser” or a “special teaser”. This type of teaser allows the bettor to choose three to five teams and gives a larger number of points to alter the spread with. In return, the bettor wins less than they risked in the bet.

The second type of teaser gambling, also known as a “Vegas teaser” or just a plain “teaser”, is a combination between a parlay and the teaser explained above. The difference between a super teaser and a Vegas teaser is that, with a Vegas teaser, the bettor will receive fewer points to adjust the spread with. The more teams wagered upon, the higher the eventual pay-out will be. To take a thorough look at parlay bets, head to our in-depth article of parlay betting.

How do I calculate my odds of winning with teaser betting when given the point spread?

Once again it is beneficial for us to consider an example point spread. Say that it’s the Superbowl and the game is Pittsburgh vs Green Bay.

The odds are:

  • Green Bay: (-2.5)
  • Pittsburgh: (+2.5)
  • Over/under (45.5)

These odds indicate that Green Bay is the favourite to win this match and that the combined score of both teams will be about 45.5. Normally, when these two bets are played together as a parlay, the bettor will win $260 on a $100 bet. With a teaser, however, the bettor will only win $100 on a $110 bet, because they get 6 points to adjust the spread in either direction in their favour.

If one were to bet on Pittsburgh, they would then become (+8.5) underdogs (+2.5 + 6). Similarly, if one were to bet on Green Bay then they would become +3.5 underdogs ( -2.5 + 6). If you were to bet on the over then the line would become 39.5 (45.5 – 6) and if you were to bet on the under then the line would become 51.5 (45.5 + 6).

Despite the lower pay-out, many people like teaser bets because it gives the gambler more cushioning and higher odds to win your bet. That being said it’s not easy to win a teaser. Like a parlay, it is necessary for one to hit all aspects of the bet to win. There is debate within the experienced sport bettor’s community about whether teasers are good wagers or not.

Teasers are popular enough that most sportsbooks also offer teaser cards which are similar to parlay cards. The teasers found on these cards usually involve 3 or more teams, and all spreads and totals included on these teaser cards have half points to avoid ties. Cards will quite often be printed in the morning and the lines on the cards are fixed.

Although teasers seem easy to win, winning multiple bets, regardless of point spread is never easy. Adjusted lines do help bettors be a little more confident in their bets. With that added confidence and certainty comes the equal and opposite reaction that teaser bet payouts will be lessened because a teaser is supposedly easier to win than a parlay.

It’s important to look at the rules for pushes in teasers. They generally remain the same across most sportsbooks on the internet. If a leg in a teaser pushes, while any other leg is a loss then the teaser bet is considered a loss. A push and all wins are consolidated in the same way that they would be in a parlay. A three team  teaser with two wins and a push as the result, is paid-out as a two team teaser. In the case where the result of a three team teaser is two pushes and a win, bets are refunded.

Why should I bet on sports betting teasers? – The world of teaser betting football

Teasers have all the advantages of spread betting with the added bonus of being able to manipulate the point spread in your favour. Some added bonuses are:

You are rewarded for being knowledgeable

With other more conventional types of betting, you are either wrong or right. With sports spreads and teasers, however, the more correct you are – AKA the more you can use your knowledge to make informed decisions, the more money you stand to win. In this way, spread teasers on spread bets rewards skill and judgement, instead of just pure luck.

There are thousands of markets to choose from

Teasers and spread bets are everywhere! If you can imagine it, someone is offering a spread bet on it. While spread betting is most common in football and basketball it has been pervading the rest of the sports world for a while. You can even do spread bets and teasers on financial markets.

You can bet against a favourite

Teasers and spread bets offer you the ability to go against a favourite by selling on the spread. If you don’t have a horse you think is going to win, but you don’t like the look of the one everyone else is saying is going to take the win. Then you can simply bet against that horse.

You can bet in-play

Spread betting was actually the originator of in-play betting. The fluid buying or selling of points makes for a natural way to bet in-play. To take a look at some of the best offers on the sports betting market, head to our US Sportsbook page right here at Wetten.

Bet over a whole meet or tournament

Spread betting allows you to take a long-term view of a meeting, event or tournament. You can bet on things like how many goals a certain player will score in a soccer tournament or how many wickets a bowler will take throughout an entire test series.

When you are betting on football, you should always wait 30 minutes before game time to make your bets. This is especially true with NFL games. At the thirty minutes before game time mark, the NFL betting lines represent the largest and most successful professional gamblers’ opinions of the true probabilities of the game. This is the time that you will be best informed to make your own bets.

Conclusion – Place your first teaser bet

Here are a few final words about teasers. Teasers are great for increasing your odds of winning, but you should never get overconfident. It often happens that someone can be on a winning streak for weeks on end but it only takes one week to bring all of that crashing down. Use your head, generally if the odds are good enough to bet straight, it will be better to tease if you have a leg to match it with. This brings us to the end of our guide to teaser betting. There are plenty of opportunities out there to make the most of this betting option and you can use this guide whenever you have one available.
