Dak Prescott – Dak Prescott (retouched) – CC
Dallas Cowboys star quarterback Dak Prescott is entering his seventh season with the franchise. Both he and the Cowboys have something in common ahead of the start of the 2022 NFL regular season — and that is postseason success. Despite a humiliating end last season, the QB had high hopes that the upcoming season will be the one they are looking for.
Dallas was unable to repeat its 1995 Super Bowl title success. The team might have been over other fellow NFC Conference teams last season after posting a 12-5 win-loss record and that was the best the Cowboys can offer. Prescott, who was drafted to the big league two years after the now former veteran wide receiver Devin Street, shared that he plans to make next year “a golden year”.
Prescott was drafted by the team in 2016. The team initially had plans to develop him behind former quarterback turned analyst Tony Romo. The Cowboys ended up wanting to have the young Prescott onboard after a failed trade-up to pick both Paxton Lynch and Connor Cook. Surely enough, the Louisiana native was acquired in the fourth round of that year’s NFL Draft in 135th overall.
Since that year, Prescott remains loyal to the team despite Dallas’ unfortunate luck throughout the years to win a Super Bowl title. Gearing up for the next year, the QB said that he plans to make the new season the “golden year” — and knowing that the team has been playing long enough without any Super Bowl rings since the mid-90s, that thought stays with him for quite some time.
“Obviously knowing the quarterbacks that played specifically for this team and knowing their legacy,” Prescott said.
“And the ones that we hold at the highest standard are the ones that have Super Bowl rings. It starts there for me, trying to fill the shoes of those guys that have come before me and do something for this organization that hasn’t been done in a long time.”
The Cowboys already have conducted training from July 27 to July 30 and in August, the team will also have a packed month with a series of training schedules. Head coach Mike McCarthy revealed that he considers revolving the team’s offense around Prescott, whom he thinks has improved.
“This offense is built around making the quarterback successful, and this is Dak Prescott’s offense,” McCarthy said. “I think you see him really taking ownership of that. … I think he is a guy who emulates exactly what you are looking for. He is always working in all areas. He is improving everywhere.”
Tight end Dalton Schultz also shared a similar sentiment to the head coach, adding that Prescott had “a lot more horsepower” in his throws.
“I catch his footballs every day, and the dude’s got like just an uncanny amount of zip on his ball now,” Schultz said. “He’s been working his butt off all offseason. And this year specifically, I’ve kind of had a front-row seat of that, so I’m looking forward to seeing him take a leap this year.”
Making Prescott a crucial piece for the team in the new season was not the only thing that McCarthy had plans to do. Aside from that, the head coach was keen on improving Dallas’ defense pieces. However, for him, a good QB department is the main determiner of a Super Bowl-winning team.
