General manager Kelly McCrimmon has announced that the Vegas Golden Knights will replace starting goaltender Robin Lehner with Logan Thompson and Laurent Brossoit.
Lehner will be out of the upcoming 2022-2023 NHL season due to a hip injury requiring surgery.
“Laurent is a proven NHL goaltender that’s enjoyed a good career. In Logan Thompson, I think we’re all excited and intrigued by his talent, his upside, and his competitiveness,” McCrimmon said.
Lehner joined the team from the Chicago Blackhawks after being traded for goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury. Lehner has a record of 23-17-2 and a .907 save percentage. However, his shoulder injury eventually halted him from finishing the 2021-2022 season.
Lehner got his shoulder fixed through surgery right after the season ended and thereafter,he stayed in Las Vegas for rehab. He then returned to Sweden after he experienced issues with his hips.
Lehner decided to come back to Las Vegas and had his hips MRI scanned and analyzed by team doctors in the last week of July. He also went to specialists in Nashville, who said he needed double hip surgery.
“The doctors really felt that he wouldn’t be able to get through a season,” McCrimmon said.
It was a month ago when the team announced that Lehner would miss the 2022-23 season. Currently, he has already had one of his hips fixed. Still, he needs to wait another ten weeks before he gets his other hip operated on.
“I think that everybody expected us to find a goalie. Internally, we liked these two guys,” McCrimmon said.
“We had a lot of conversations with our goalie coach, Sean Burke, and head coach Bruce Cassidy. I think these two [goalies] have earned that opportunity.”
Brossoit went 10-9-3 with a .895 save percentage last season, while Thompson posted a 10-5-3 record with a .914 save percentage.
