The Philadelphia Eagles announced on Thursday that they had appointed seven players to captain the team in its 2022 campaign. Eagles players voted Jalen Hurts, Jason Kelce, Lane Johnson, Brandon Graham, Fletcher Fox, Darius Slay and Jake Elliott to lead them.
Hurts will be a team captain for the second time after last season. The youngest of the captains, Hurts, is a starting quarterback who has proven his leadership qualities. He joined the Eagles in 2020 as a backup rookie.
Kelce is entering his fifth year as a captain, making him the longest offensive player in the line. The 34-year-old is set to return to the field after “routine cleanout” elbow surgery. He is expected to be back for the season opener against the Detroit Lions on September 11.
Johnson is a new addition to the offensive captain line. He became an Eagles captain for the first time in his career as he enters his tenth season with the team.
Hurts praised Johnson for being a great person and player.
“He’s a guy that always puts out his best effort. Always puts out his best foot forward,” Hurts said. “He’s one of the all-time great Eagles. For us to have this opportunity to acknowledge his greatness and his leadership and his play, I think it’s big.”
Graham and Cox will serve their fourth and fifth year as a captain, respectively. It makes them the longest-serving defensive players in the captain line.
Graham recently recovered from an Achilles injury he sustained last season. Meanwhile, there is a possibility that the 2022 season would be Cox’s last season, as he only signed a one-year contract with the team.
Slay entered the captain line as Rodney McLeod left for free agency. This is his first time as a captain, entering his third season with the team.
Placekicker Elliott entered captaincy as a first-timer as well. Elliott was a part of the Super Bowl LII championship team.
The seven captains will don the “C” logo through the 2022 season.
