Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has said he helped the team Davante Adams this offseason. The star wide receiver joined the Raiders from the Green Bay Packers via trade after he and the team failed to agree on a deal.
Adams said it was less about what the Packers offered him, but more about wanting to rejoin his former teammate and return to the West Coast. Adams and Carr played together at Fresno State.
Although team executives and coaches are restricted from contacting opposing players, no rule forbids players from contacting their counterparts, which Carr took advantage of.
When the Packers lost a home game against the San Francisco 49ers in an NFC divisional round in January, Carr decided to call Adams.
“I’m not going to lie,” Carr said. “I texted him the next day. I couldn’t help myself.”
“As soon as I saw his name pop up, I knew what it was about,” Adams said.
Adams eventually went to sign a five-year, $141.25 million contract with the Raiders despite the Packers offering him a bigger deal.
“The coolest part wasn’t the football part; it was that I got my friend back,” Carr says. “I think that’s the coolest part.”
Adams found out about his trade after former Packers assistant coach Luke Getsy texted him a screenshot of the news. At the same time Carr’s wife, Heather, texted Adam’s wife, Devanne, about the same information.
“There were probably 100,000 people out there who knew I was on the Raiders before I did,” Adams said.
Adams recently made it clear on The Pivot Podcast that he was not going to the Raiders to hang out with Carr. He said he was determined to win the Super Bowl with the Raiders.
“I didn’t come here to be cute and just hang out with Derek (Carr) and all of that, I want to get that trophy at the end of the year,” Adams said.
