Cincinnati Bengals Quarterback Joe Burrow said Wednesday following a Week 2 20-17 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys that the team was “gonna be fine”.
The Bengals finished second last season after being defeated by the Los Angeles Rams in the final. The team was close to winning its first-ever Super Bowl since its inception in 1967. Last season also marked their 15th playoff appearance—the first since 2015. However, the team is now 0-2 early in the season.
“Let’s all just take a deep breath and relax. We’re gonna be fine. We’re not worried about it,” he said.
Following their playoff appearance last year, the reigning AFC champion has a 7-point favorite in each contest this season, according to ESPN. However, the Bengals were criticized by fans for their poor offense in the first quarter against the Cowboys. In addition to being limited to three points while Dallas collected 14, the Bengals only made three touchdowns.
Burrow contributed 24 out of 36 passes for 199 yards to add to his single touchdown, a slight decline from his Week 1 stats of 33 out of 53 passes for 338 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The Bengals four-year head coach Zac Taylor said he understood why Burrow was trying to keep his calm. Taylor said the expectations shouldered by the team should motivate them this season.
“We’ve been begging for expectations. We’ve been begging for high standards, and now they’re here and this is part of it. When you start out slower than what you hoped and what people anticipated, then you’re gonna deal with that. And I love it,” Taylor said.
“At the end of the day, we know that we have a good football team and that we’re gonna get back on track and we’ll be in good shape. And everyone can relax.”
The Bengals will face the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium on September 25.
