The New England Patriots were defeated 37-26 by the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. The loss pushed the Patriots further down the standings with an early season record of 1-2. In addition, New England second-year quarterback Mac Jones left the game with a left leg injury.
Jones was hit by Ravens defensive end Calais Campbell on his lower left leg after he threw a pass in the fourth quarter of the game. The 24-year-old could be seen in pain as he grabbed his ankle on the ground before leaving the field. Jones finished the game with 22 out of 32 pass attempts for 321 yards. He also made three interceptions.
“Just trying to get pressure on him. Hit him. Make him uncomfortable. I hate to see him get hurt. That’s the worst part of the game. I hope he is OK,” Campbell said.
According to multiple sources, the QB sustained a severe left ankle injury. The Athletic’s Jeff Howe said Jones will have an MRI on Monday to check the severity of his injury. Jones was initially believed to suffer a high ankle sprain, an injury that often sidelines players for weeks.
Patriots veteran head coach Bill Belichick did not provide any updates on Jones in the post-game press conference. Nevertheless, it is unlikely for the 2021 Pro Bowler to join the team on October 2 game at Lambeau Field to face the Green Bay Packers.
In the meantime, with Jones’ likely absence in Week 4, Belichick might have to resort to veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, who signed a two-year contract extension this March following his signing in 2020. This year is the third consecutive time for Hoyer to serve as the team’s second-string quarterback.
“Brian Hoyer, he’s a leader. He’s a vet. He knows the defenses. He’s seen it all,” teammate wide receiver DeVante Parker said.
