Boston Celtics star center Robert Williams has opened up about his knee injury. The Big Man underwent surgery on his left knee in the offseason. While appearing at Celtics Media Day on September 26, Williams discussed the mental effect it had caused him.
According to the teamâs official release, Williamsâ surgery would put him out for eight to 12 weeks or until 2023. Meanwhile, the 2022â2023 NBA season starts on October 28.
“Just some recurring problems. Obviously, it took a toll on me mentally. I want to be there. But all I can focus on is rehab now. Getting back on the court,” he said.
“We all know I was battling through injuries at the end of last season. I made a decision as a man to keep playing. It was my decision, regardless of the recurring injuries whenever they did happen.”
Last season, Williams suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee. The team then announced on March 28 that he would be out indefinitely for surgery. Williams appeared in the playoffs but failed to give a significant contribution. His playing time and point average per game were 29.6 minutes and 10.0 points in the regular season. These numbers dropped to 23.2 minutes and 7.7 points in the postseason.
Boston faced the Golden State Warriors in the finals. Williams said he did not regret his decision to participate in the matchup despite his team losing.
“No⊠I played in the Finals, man. You win some, you lose some, but I donât regret my decision at all. I was 24 years old, my dream was to play in the Finals. Canât regret that s***,” he said.
When asked about his rehab, Williams said he was confident with his conditions, adding he would nail his return next year.
“Nobody knows if theyâre going to get hurt again. But like I said, Iâm pretty confident, man. I made a decision to come back in a timely fashion last year. But, you know, weâre going to get right this time, man,” Williams said.
