Boxing legend Manny Pacquiao said he wanted to take one last ride in the United Kingdom before truly hanging up his gloves. The former boxer said his one last gig in the Land of the Rose could be either an exhibition or a professional matchup.
Pacquiao announced his retirement from professional boxing last September after competing in 72 total fights—of which he won 62, lost eight, and had two draws.
Speaking to FITE TV, the 43-year-old said he had high hopes that “a fight will happen” there. Likely, he was trying to rekindle a failed bout proposal with retired British boxer Amir Khan.
“I am hoping before my boxing career ends, I will have an exhibition or professional fight in the UK. I hope that a fight will happen,” Pacquiao said.
Reportedly, the proposal came sometime in 2017. To the disappointment of boxing fans of the country, however, it was called off for unknown reasons in 2019.
Pacquiao and Khan used to train together at the Wild Card in California, one of boxing’s most iconic gyms, under the famous trainer Freddie Roach. Roach and Pacquiao’s former promoter, Bob Arum, claimed the two boxers had multiple fights, with Khan being knocked out “on many occasions.”
Nonetheless, the former gym partners still hold a multitude of respect for each other. Khan said he was only interested in “big fights,” including one with the Filipino legend.
“There’s been lots of talk about me and Manny fighting for years, going back to when we were together under Freddie. It’s a fight I’d love and now it looks like it will finally happen. I want to get back in the mix. That’s why I took this fight so soon after [Terence] Crawford,” Khan said.
“I’m only interested in big fights, and a fight with Manny Pacquiao would definitely be a big fight.”
