Novak Djokovic defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) in the opening game of the ATP Finals on Monday, depriving the Greek player of his chance for the world’s No. 1 seat.
Djokovic held control over the game since the first set, and Tsisipas only managed one break point in the second set over Djokovic’s double faults. In the tiebreak, the Serbian-born player led the game 5-1 before Tsisipas stole three points. Djokovic eventually won the game.
Reflecting on his performance, Djokovic insisted he was “very solid all the way through.” He said breaking Tsisipas’ serve in the first game was the most vital move.
“Starting with a break of serve is obviously a huge boost in confidence and a relief as well because we both knew it would be a tight match,” Djokovic said.
Djokovic is currently No. 8 in the world. He did not participate in two major tournaments, including the Australian Open, because of his vaccination status.
Djokovic said he respected the decision not to let him play. He also expressed his hope that some tournaments would change their regulations so he could participate in them.
Tsisipas’ defeat to Djokovic places injured Carlos Alcaraz as the top contender for No. 1 in 2022. Rafael Nadal also still has the chance to become this year’s No. 1 if he wins the tournament. Last Sunday, Nadal lost the opening game to Taylor Fritz.
In a post-game conference, Tsisipas said that “it would have been better” if he won over Djokovic. However, he assured the public that he was “not really that much in a rush” to be the world’s No. 1. Based on Tsisipas’ current points, he will not reach the top position even if he wins the tournament.
On Monday, Russia’s Andrey Rublev also defeated fellow countryman Daniil Medvedev. Rublev took control of the first set and continued to lead thereon. Meanwhile, Medvedev displayed inconsistent serve throughout the matchup. The world’s No. 5 made eight double faults in total.
