Andre Burakovsky scored a winner in the overtime of the Seattle Kraken’s 9-8 win over the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday night. During the highest-scoring NHL game this season, he had two goals to the Kings’ net.
At 2:08 of overtime, Burakovsky scored on a power play to give the team its first six-game winning streak in franchise history.
“I got the puck in a good area, and I’ll take that shot from there all day,” Burakovsky said.
However, the Austrian-born forward was not satisfied with the win. He said that it was a messed-up game. The Kraken was trading chances with a lot of sloppy plays. He thought the team—including him— was playing a bad game. He added that the Kraken was lucky because Los Angeles did not play well.
Jacque McCann and Matty Beniers scored twice in their second NHL season, setting a team goal record. Martin Jones made 27 saves, and Alex Wennberg, Daniel Sprong and Oliver Bjorkstrand also scored.
“End of the day, it was one of those games where last shot wins, and that’s exactly what happened,” Kraken coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s better to be on the winning side and the good side of it than the other, but it’s a crazy hockey game.”
King coach Todd McLellan, on the other hand, said that it was a confusing night for him and the team and that they needed to figure it out. He was disappointed after allowing nine goals. He was pleased, however, because the Kings countered with eight goals.
The Kings’ Gabe Vilardi scored twice, but Cal Petersen allowed four goals on 16 shots after replacing Jonathan Quick early in the second period. Los Angeles also received goals from Anze Kopitar, Viktor Arvidsson, Carl Grundstrom, Adrian Kempe, Sean Durzi and Mikey Anderson.
Durzi trimmed the lead to 8-7 with 8:16 left in the third period. Anderson tied it with 6:21 left. When Trevor Moore played the puck in the offensive zone before Kempe could get to the bench, it appeared as if the Kings were in a position to score in overtime.
Seattle will face the Washington Capitals on December 1 at Climate Pledge Arena.
