New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh recently discussed some criticisms toward quarterback Zach Wilson. According to Saleh, Wilson had down due to a lack of public trust in his recent performance.
Wilson started a recent game against the Detroit Lions after being benched on November 23 as he faced public criticism for his poor play and lack of accountability.
Saleh described the situation as the effect of an “instant-coffee world” and defended the player.
“The frustrating thing is that this kid is going to be a good quarterback, but the NFL and this new instant-coffee world that we’re in just doesn’t want to give people time,”

“(Wilson) is just nitpicked with a fine-tooth comb with everything that he does,” Saleh said.
In the game against Detroit, Wilson replaced Mike White as he was out due to fractured ribs. Wilson completed 18 out of 35 passes for 317 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Saleh complimented his performance but emphasized that the 23-year-old signal-caller still needed to improve.
“He did a lot of really good things and so we’re going to try our best to focus on the things that he did good and make sure we bring that to life,” Saleh said.
Wilson tallied several passing chances, a 40-yard TD to C.J. Uzomah, a 50-yard pass to Jeff Smith and a pair of 33-yard passes to Garrett Wilson. For Saleh, he did a “nice job.”
“I thought he did a nice job. He got back on track (in the fourth quarter) and finished strong,” Saleh said.
Statistically, Wilson is 26th in quarterback rating with a 42.3 total QBR, 54.9 percent completion percentage, six passing TDs and six INTs.
Saleh revealed there would be no guaranteed starting spot for Wilson in an upcoming game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also talked about the uncertainty regarding White starting. He said that the Jets needed further medical procedures to clear him for play.
“There are more scans to see how much he’s healed,” Saleh said.
