Milwaukee Bucks star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo scored a career-high of 55 points on Tuesday night, helping his team defeat the Washington Wizards 123-113. Antetokounmpo also added seven assists and ten rebounds on top of his record.
In a post-game interview, Antetokounmpo said he wanted to maintain a consistent performance that people would find boring.
“I want other people to feel like my game is boring,” the two-time MVP said. “But I don’t get bored. The greats — the best players — never get bored. They go out there and they always give their best any given night.”
In the last three games, Giannis has been averaging at least 40 points, five assists and ten rebounds per game. He followed the footsteps of three other great players in NBA history — Elgin Baylor, Wilt Chamberlain and Russell Westbrook — who also hit 40 points, five assists and ten rebounds for three consecutive games.
Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer described Antetokounmpo’s performance in the Wizards game as “phenomenal.” The 53-year-old coach said Giannis has been playing with a lot of determination so far this season.
Teammate Brook Lopez also praised the Greek Freak, saying that he had never seen the forward playing better than this season. Lopez, who scored 21 points on Tuesday, said Giannis continues improving his performance over the seasons.
The Bucks’ forward’s previous record was 52 points, which he hit during a game against the Philadelphia 76ers in March 2019. With his current record, Antetokounmpo was shy of breaking the franchise’s single-game scoring record by Michael Redd. In November 2006, Redd scored 57 points while playing the Utah Jazz.
Bucks’ Bobby Portis recorded 17 points and 13 rebounds to boost the team’s score. Jrue Holiday, who missed the last three games because of illness, scored six points for Milwaukee as well.
Milwaukee’s victory on Tuesday allowed the team to avenge its previous 118-95 loss to Washington on Sunday. At that time, Antetokounmpo had to sit out due to pain in his left knee.
As for the Wizards, the defeat to Milwaukee had snapped their five-win streak.
