Fans have slammed Dallas Cowboys kicker Brett Maher for his decline in performance during the latest games of the NFL playoffs. He failed to nail extra points conversions against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the Wild Card round and the San Francisco 49ers in the divisional round.
Against the San Francisco 49ers, Maher missed his first attempt of extra point conversion. Fox analyst Greg Olsen discussed his opinion on Maher’s kick, saying it was a bit low and seemed to be heading wide left. Olsen noted that Maher’s performance had gone downhill since then.
Before this divisional matchup, the Cowboys had eliminated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from the playoff. Maher and his teammate defeated the Bucs 31-14 to prevent Tom Brady from getting his eighth ring.
However, Maher missed four extra-point attempts straight. His poor performance earned him too many failed extra-point conversions in NFL playoff history, tying with former Pittsburgh Steelers kicker Roy Gerela as the worst NFL playoff kicker.
Analysts had predicted that Maher’s poor record against the Bucs would lead Dallas to look for a replacement for the game against San Fransisco. That said, Maher did play against the 49ers, with the Cowboys losing the game 19-12. In that game, Maher scored two out of two field goal attempts from 25 and 43 yards.
When asked by former NFL player Peyton Manning about Maher’s performance on ESPN’s Manningcast, Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell gave a satirical comment.
“Just got the shanks a little bit,” Campbell said as Maher missed his fourth extra-point attempt in a row.
Likewise, Texas Governor Greg Abbott said he mocked Maher’s performance in the game against the Buccaneers, saying he would have fared just as well as a kicker.
“I swear, I can kick as good as the Dallas Cowboys kicker,” Abbott said.
