On Thursday, Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn announced his decision to stay with the team for the upcoming season.
According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, multiple teams had offered Quinn a head coach job, and he had had talks with some of them. These included the Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts, as well as the Arizona Cardinals, where he was the strongest candidate.
Moreover, Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talks, Quinn had a “strong interest” in joining the Broncos and working again with GM George Paton, with whom the 52-year-old had worked together before at the Miami Dolphins.
However, he ended up turning down all of them because “his heart is in Dallas and he wants to win a Super Bowl there.” Quinn told ESPN’s Ed Werder that he had decided to lengthen his tenure at Dallas for at least another year due to “unfinished business.”
“Unfinished business here in Dallas. My complete focus is helping the team play championship ball in 2023,” Quinn said.
Under Quinn, the Cowboys ranked 20th in passing, 16th in rushing and seventh in points allowed during the 2021 regular season. Then, in 2022 the Cowboys became the eighth-ranked team in passing, 22nd in rushing and fifth in points allowed.
Analysts often point out Quinn’s role in helping Micah Parsons develop into an NFL Defensive Player of the Year finalist and won DROY honors in 2021.
Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy expressed excitement about Quinn’s decision to stay. McCarthy had earlier stressed that he wanted Quinn to remain a Cowboys defensive coordinator for their 2023 campaign.
“We’re all extremely excited to have Dan back,” McCarthy said. “Had a chance to visit with him a short while ago. This is big for us. Gives us continuity, definitely what we’ve accomplished the last two years, building off of that. Frankly, on a personal note, I can’t tell you how thankful I am.”
