On Wednesday, the Arizona Coyotes traded top defenseman Jakob Chychrun to the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional first-round pick in 2023, a conditional second-round pick in 2024 that initially belonged to the Washington Capitals and another second-round pick in 2026.
Should Ottawa advance to the 2023 Eastern Conference Finals, its 2024 second-round pick will be upgraded to a top-10 protected first-round pick. If that happens, the pick becomes an unprotected first-round pick in 2025.
With the addition of Chychrun, Ottawa’s young defense core will benefit from the expertise and direction of a seasoned veteran. Chychrun, whose contract has two years left and carries a cap hit of $4.6 million, is joining Thomas Chabot, Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub in Ottawa’s defensive lineup. The team’s defense has been adversely affected by injuries this season but has great potential when fully healthy.
The Senators have won three and 10 in a row of their last 14 games. The team has 22 matchups left in the regular season and is five points away from a wild-card place in the Eastern Conference.
The team’s general manager, Pierre Dorion, brought Chychrun in to help them in their playoff push in the next six weeks.
“A defenceman we’ve coveted, Jakob is big and plays imposing,” Dorion said.
The manager praised the newly acquired player, saying he possesses a high skill level. Dorion explained that Chychrun wields his heavy shot precisely and is an effective offensive threat at the blue line.
In addition, the 24-year-old player has notably exceptional versatility since he can play either side on the ice. He also has a high level of mobility that often sees him entering the rush.
Chychrun scored 60 times and assisted 110 times in his 373 games with the Coyotes so far. In 36 games this season, he tallied seven goals and 21 assists.
