On Wednesday, the New York Jets signed former Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Mecole Hardman to a one-year contract worth a maximum of $6.5 million.
This deal followed the departure of wide receiver Elijah Moore and may also be part of the Jets’ efforts to acquire Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers.
According to ESPN, the Jets received the second-round pick (No. 42 overall) from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Moore and their 2023 third-round pick (No. 74 overall).
The Jets now have two second-round picks (No. 42 and 43) that they can use to strengthen their position in negotiations for a potential trade involving Rodgers.
Last week, the Packers star quarterback expressed his desire to play for the Jets in 2023. However, negotiations between the parties involved have stalled due to disagreements over compensation.
Hardman, who spent four seasons with Kansas City, will be among the top veteran joining the Jets. The team already has a solid receiving corps, including Allen Lazard, who recently signed a four-year, $44 million contract, and the 2022 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Garrett Wilson.
In addition, the Jets also have Corey Davis and Denzel Mims, who are in the final year of their contracts. However, the Jets may opt to release or trade them in the coming weeks. Releasing Davis, in particular, would provide a much-needed boost to the team’s cap space, freeing up $10.5 million.
Hardman caught 25 passes for 297 yards and scored four touchdowns in eight games for Kansas City in the 2022 regular season. In addition to his receiving stats, he rushed for two touchdowns and gained 31 yards.
Hardman could not play in the Chiefs’ final nine games of the regular season and their divisional-round playoff game following a pelvic injury.
The 25-year-old returned to the field during the AFC Championship Game, where he caught two passes for 10 yards but did not participate in Super Bowl LVII.
After being selected by the Chiefs in the second round of the 2019 draft, Hardman’s most productive season was in 2021. He achieved personal career bests with 59 receptions and 693 receiving yards.
