All-Star guard Stephen Curry hit a playoff career-high of 50 points in Game 7 on Sunday as the Golden State Warriors advanced to the second round of the playoffs by beating the Sacramento Kings 120-100 at Golden 1 Center.

Before Sunday’s game, former Warriors player and 13-time NBA All-Star Kevin Durant held the record for the most points scored in a Game 7 with 48 points during the Brooklyn Nets’ defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2021 playoffs.

In his remarkable performance, Curry became the first Warrior to score over 40 in a Game 7 and broke the NBA’s Game 7 scoring record by shooting 20 out of 38 from the field and seven of 18 from the 3-point line.

Warriors center Kevon Looney was also instrumental in securing the victory, contributing 21 rebounds, 10 of which were on the offensive end. The 27-year-old also managed to score 11 points and four assists.

Warriors’ sluggish start, Curry’s dominance

Golden State’s Draymond Green kicked off Sunday’s game with a dunk. The lead kept changing hands in the first half as both teams engaged in a close battle.

Sacramento stayed ahead at the end of the first and most of the second quarter. During this time, Curry struggled and missed his first two free throws. However, he returned after scoring an and-one and celebrated by raising his arms.

Curry had 20 points, four rebounds and three assists during the first half, while Kings All-Star guard Domantas Sabonis scored 18 points.

While Curry scored points in the first half, Warriors’ Klay Thompson wasn’t performing well. Thompson only scored seven points and missed his first four three-point attempts. However, he managed to finish the game with 16 points.

At halftime, the Warriors were losing 58-56 but took control in the second half. They started the third quarter with a 13-4 run in the first four minutes. Curry played a vital role in this run as he drove past 2020 NBA All-Rookie Second Team Terence Davis for an and-one and gave the Warriors a five-point lead in the third quarter.

Toward the end of the third quarter, the Warriors gained momentum after Thompson made an impressive four-point play just before the buzzer. His successful three-pointer and free throw widened Golden State’s lead and secured a 91-81 lead that they maintained in the fourth quarter.
