The Vegas Golden Knights dominated Game 1 of the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs against the Edmonton Oilers. They secured a 6-4 victory despite Leon Draisaitl’s impressive four-goal performance at T-Mobile Arena.
Early in the first period, the Oilers netted the puck with the help of captain Connor McDavid. He created space and made a fast cross-seam pass to Draisaitl for the net.
The Golden Knights then tied the game 1-1 just 40 seconds after Draisaitl’s initial goal with a score from Ivan Barbashev, who capitalized on a turnover.
Only five minutes after Draisaitl’s first goal, Vegas quickly took advantage of the Oilers’ defense to take a 2-1 lead. Later, a power-play goal from captain Mark Stone extended the lead to 3-1.
After conceding three goals, Draisaitl showed his perseverance, and the Oilers superstar scored his second goal in the first period’s final seconds, reducing Vegas’ lead to 3-2.
The German found another goal in the third period, briefly tying the game at 3-3. However, Vegas responded quickly to Edmonton’s effort.
The Golden Knights answered with two more impressive goals from left winger Ivan Barbashev and center Chandler Stephenson, regaining their two-goal lead.
Draisaitl’s fourth goal, which came off another impressive cross-seam pass from McDavid, managed to decrease the lead to 5-4.
However, Edmonton’s comeback attempt was thwarted when they were penalized for having too many players on the ice. To seal the deal, center Jack Eichel scored an empty-net goal for Vegas.
Oilers supporters took to social media to vent their frustration, saying that Draisaitl’s remarkable performance had gone in vain.
Even Golden Knights head coach Bruce Cassidy expressed his admiration for Draisaitl, telling the media, “Eleven goals for Draisaitl. Does that sound funny to you? We’re in the first game of the second round?”
On Tuesday night, Dallas Stars alternate captain Joe Pavelski also suffered the disappointment of losing after scoring four goals in a game. Pavelski faced the Seattle Kraken, who won in overtime with a 5-4 final score.
