The NFL will release the 2023 regular season schedule this Thursday. NFL Network has planned to broadcast a live three-hour schedule announcement show at 8 p.m. ET on May 11.
NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported on Twitter on Monday that the upcoming schedule would feature rematches of postseason contests from the previous year. These rematches have the potential to generate significant interest and hype among fans as teams seek to redeem their losses or maintain their winning streaks.
Schefter said that this season would set a new record, with 14 games scheduled to feature rematches from last season. This marks the highest number of playoff rematches in NFL history.
“This season’s schedule will feature 14 playoff rematches from last season, the most in a season in NFL history, including rematches of the Super Bowl (Chiefs-Eagles), both Conf Championships (Bengals-Chiefs & 49ers-Eagles) and all 4 Divisional games (Bengals-Bills, Jaguars-Chiefs, Cowboys-49ers and Giants-Eagles),” Schefter said.
Notably, the 2023 season will include a rematch of last year’s Super Bowl, with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles facing off once again. Additionally, the Eagles will also face the San Francisco 49ers, while the Chiefs will take on the Cincinnati Bengals.
Four divisional games from last season will also be rematched. The schedule includes rematches of the Bengals versus the Buffalo Bills, the Jacksonville Jaguars versus Kansas, the Dallas Cowboys versus the 49ers and the New York Giants versus the Philadelphia Eagles.
Schefter later revealed even more details about the NFL’s upcoming schedule release. For example, this year’s regular season will feature a game on Black Friday for the first time in NFL history, expanding the league’s traditional three-game slate on Thanksgiving.
Some teams can now appear twice on Thursday Night Football as well, instead of the previous limit of one appearance per season.
