The doubleheader between the New York Yankees and Chicago White Sox ended with a split amid hazy conditions caused by smoke from Canadian wildfires.

The White Sox bagged its fifth consecutive win with four home runs, leading them to a 6-5 victory, in Game 1 at Yankee Stadium on Thursday. However, their season-high winning streak ended as the Yankees shut them out 3-0 in the nightcap.

Game 1 was initially set for Wednesday, but MLB postponed the game, along with the Philadelphia Phillies-Detroit Tigers finale in Philadelphia, due to smoke covering parts of the Northeast. After closely monitoring the air quality situation in both cities, MLB greenlit the two games on Thursday.

Gleyber Torres and Billy McKinney carried the Yankees with home runs. Torres delivered a two-run homer in the fourth inning, while McKinney added a solo shot in the following inning.

Right-handers Randy Vásquez, Ron Marinaccio and Clay Holmes also showcased dominant pitching to prevent a series sweep.

In his second big-league start, Vásquez allowed only two hits and struck out three batters in 5⅔ innings – earning him his first MLB victory. He proceeded to retire the next 15 batters he faced, maintaining his dominant performance.

Earlier in the game, Jake Burger, Luis Robert and Yoán Moncada hit a home run for the White Sox. Their performance brought them within three games of the top spot in the American League Central. Despite another poor start from Lance Lynn, the team managed to overcome it along with a nerve-racking bottom of the ninth inning in Game 1.

In Game 2, Chicago starter Mike Clevinger delivered a strong pitching performance, allowing three runs on six hits in 5⅔ innings. However, the Sox struggled to produce offense, managing only two singles from Eloy Jiménez and Gavin Sheets.

With the split result, the White Sox find themselves 3½ games behind the division leaders in the American League Central with a record of 28-36.

The Yankees will host the Boston Red Sox on Friday, while the White Sox are facing off against the Miami Marlins on Saturday.
