The San Antonio Spurs have finally introduced the newest addition to the team, Victor Wembanyama. He arrived on Friday via a private plane.
Wembanyama is considered to be the most talented prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James. The 7-foot-4 center/forward can dominate both defense and offense. He has the size and athleticism to be a force in the paint, but he is also skilled enough to dribble like a point guard and shoot from three-point range efficiently.
He showcased these skills within four professional seasons in France, with an average of 12.8 points, 2.3 blocks, 6.7 rebounds and 1.4 assists. During his last season in his home country, Wembanyama was named MVP and Defensive Player of the Year.
With these accomplishments, fans eagerly gathered at the airport to welcome the 19-year-old Frenchman. The celebratory atmosphere lasted throughout the weekend.
“The last 72 hours have been really tiring but I’m really enjoying the moment,” said Wembanyama in the introductory press conference.
“My family and those close to me have been instrumental in my journey, and I’ve received nothing but a warm welcome everywhere I’ve been.”
This is the third time in Spurs’ history that the team has had the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, and Wembanyama is excited for his future with the team.
He looks forward to honing his skills under Gregg Popovich and seeking advice from iconic Spurs figures such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Manu Ginobili.
As the Spurs have a strong connection with France, with former players Tony Parker and Boris Diaw having played major roles in the team’s five NBA championships, Wembanyama saw this as a valuable asset. With these French icons onboard, he can reach out to them for advice and guidance whenever necessary.
This is why he is confident that the NBA will provide the perfect environment to develop his game.
The San Antonio Spurs last made the playoffs in 2019, when they were eliminated in the first round of the Western Conference. Their most recent victory was in 2014. With the young Frenchman, the team looks to end its four-year playoff drought.
According to Popovich, Wembanyama will make his first appearance in a Spurs jersey in Summer League games next month.
