On Wednesday, the San Antonio Spurs confirmed that NBA top pick Victor Wembanyama’s debut in the Spurs uniform is at the Summer League games in Las Vegas. This means Wembanyama will not be joining the team for the Summer League games in Sacramento, California.
Apart from announcing his debut, the Spurs also announced Wembanyama’s official height. Following the NBA guidelines, the Frenchman stands tall at 7 feet, 3 1/2 inches, without shoes. Wembanyama had grown a half-inch taller than October when he was in Las Vegas for exhibition games.
He is expected to be the NBA’s second-tallest player this coming season. The current tallest player is Boban Marjanovic, who is 7 feet 4 inches tall. Kristaps Porzingis, who was traded to Boston, is the third-tallest player at 7 feet 3 inches.
In Vegas, the team will go head-to-head against the Charlotte Hornets on July 7 and the Portland Trail Blazers on July 9. Wembanyama may face second-overall draft pick Brandon Miller, who joined the Hornets and Scoot Henderson, the third overall draft pick of Portland.
The 19-year-old has recently completed a full season in the French League. He has announced that he will not participate in the FIBA World Cup for France, which begins in late August. He decided to do so so he could focus on preparing for his rookie NBA campaign.
During the squad’s closed-door practice session, there were reports that Wembanyama had some impressive moments. But, as a rookie, he still has room for improvement.
“He’s obviously a good basketball player and all, but there is a lot for him to learn in that area,” said Spurs assistant coach Matt Nielsen, who is responsible for the summer league squad in both Sacramento and Las Vegas.
Second-year guard Malaki Branham said that Wembanyama appeared to be a team player. During practice, they had done a lot of scripting and other exercises together, and Wembanyama could quickly understand the material.
The practice session was Wembanyama’s first time on the court with Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.
After a few days of practice, Wembanyama will meet with reporters on Friday before the team heads to Sacramento on Saturday.
