Buffalo Bills running back Nyheim Hines is taking legal action concerning a July jet ski collision that resulted in a season-ending knee injury.

Hines’ attorney, Brad Sohn, reported that Hines had been struck by a jet skier who operated recklessly, potentially reaching speeds of 40mph. His report read,” The reckless operator was cited by authorities as causing the accident. “

Sohn then emphasized that Nyheim, who had a boating license and was likely travelling at about 10 mph, was not cited. He further mentioned that Nyheim had asked his office to ensure the responsible parties were held accountable for prematurely ending his season and potentially costing him millions of dollars.

The following sentences Sohn’s report read, “Why someone elected to rent a jet-ski to such a person and why this person chose to do so are questions my office will be looking into very closely in the coming weeks. I look forward to doing everything I can to put the pieces back together for Nyheim, who is a terrific person and client.”

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network initially reported that Hines had been sitting stationary on his jet ski when struck by the other jet skier.

Hines underwent ACL reconstruction surgery in early August. His recovery is projected to take one year, according to Pelissero.

Hines’ NFL contract situation

Hines, currently listed on the reserve/non-football injury list, remains under contract until 2024.

Previously, Hines had worked with the Bills to restructure his former Indianapolis Colts contract to align with the Bills’ salary cap. This adjustment led to Hines having a base salary of $2.56 million for 2023, with the chance of earning over $4.29 million if he met certain performance incentives.

Due to the injury from the jet ski accident, Hines will no longer receive the base salary and could potentially lose parts of the promised bonuses.

Even though Hines’ new deal featured a $1 million signing bonus and a $100,000 workout bonus, in July, the Bills proposed retaining $500,000 of that bonus money.

Nevertheless, the Bills are reportedly ready to offer Hines the highest practice-squad salary of $289,000 in 2023.
