In a recent episode of the “Let’s Go” podcast, Tom Brady told host Jim Gray that he would not be joining the New York Jets as their backup quarterback.
In the podcast, Gray asked whether the Jets had contacted Brady and if he was considering their offer. Brady responded, “Next question. You already know. I love being with you guys on Mondays, and I love what we got going.”
The rumor of Brady joining the Jets emerged after Aaron Rodgers’ season-ending injury in Week 1. Despite having retired, fans believe the Jets consider him a potential solution to improve their season.
Following Rodgers’ placement on Injured Reserve, Zach Wilson was the only quarterback on the Jets’ 53-man roster, leading the team to sign Tim Boyle from the Practice Squad ahead of Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys.
During a virtual media session on Monday, head coach Robert Saleh responded to a question about the possibility of adding another quarterback, saying, “That’s probably more of a question for [general manager] Joe [Douglas], but I don’t think so.”
Saleh then discussed Wilson’s performance, saying that everyone could see significant improvements in Wilson’s pocket presence. He also praised Wilson for delivering many impressive passes.
In another podcast, former Jets quarterback Boomer Esiason suggested that Carson Wentz could potentially become Rodgers’ backup.
“Right now, there’s no other choice for the Jets on the roster,” Esiason said. “All of us over there at ‘The NFL Today,’ everybody’s tied into something, everybody has an opinion … (and) most guys (think) that Carson Wentz would be the answer because you wouldn’t have to give up anything.”
Wentz, drafted second overall in 2016, last played on January 1 with the Washington Commanders. In a game against the Cleveland Browns, he threw for 143 yards with three interceptions. He was replaced by Taylor Heinicke after only eight games.
Over his seven seasons in the NFL, Wentz has a record of 46-45-1 as a starter, with 22,129 passing yards, 151 touchdowns and 66 interceptions. He holds a Super Bowl championship and has earned one Pro Bowl selection and one All-Pro team selection.
