Shanahan Shares Injury Updates on McCaffrey, Samuel and Others | 49ers

San Francisco 49ers stars Christian McCaffrey, Deebo Samuel and Trent Williams are benched due to injuries following Sunday’s loss to the Cleveland Browns. McCaffrey and Samuel did not return to the game, but Williams soldiered on.

Despite the injuries, there’s a possibility that all three might be available for the upcoming game against the Vikings on Monday. 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan lists them as day-to-day for now.

Shanahan clarified that McCaffrey’s injury was exclusively an oblique injury and confirmed that his rib was not involved. Meanwhile, Samuel hurt his shoulder, and Williams injured his ankle.

Their absence would be a big blow to the team. McCaffrey alone has already racked up 553 rushing yards and seven touchdowns this season. Furthermore, the former first-round pick has recorded 23 catches for 177 yards and two touchdowns.

Samuel has contributed 302 receiving yards and one touchdown on 20 catches, while Williams remains the premier left tackle in the league despite his age of 35.

‘Too much pain’

The trio, along with Aaron Banks and Dre Greenlaw, who suffered knee and hamstring injuries, respectively, missed Thursday’s practice. Joining the injury list are Isaiah Oliver and Elijah Michell with knee injuries, as well as George Odum with a quadruple contusion.

Earlier this week, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that McCaffrey kept his injury details under wraps.

“He’s like a military operative that doesn’t ever want to share anything and doesn’t want anyone to know anything about what’s wrong with him,” Schefter said.

Meanwhile, Samuel discussed his injury with NFL Network’s sports commentator Kay Adams, revealing that it had occurred on the game’s very first play.

“Right now, it’s a little sore,” Samuel told Kay Adams. “Well, kind of a lot sore, actually; kind of like day-to-day. It actually happened like the first play of the game. He [Browns S. Juan Thornhill] kind of caught me in the bicep.

“I never had a stinger before, so I never knew what it felt like. So it kind of went numb for a little minute, and then I got all my feeling back, and then I was just in too much pain to go back out there.”
