The Philadelphia 76ers extended their winning streak to eight games on Sunday with a 121-99 victory over the Brooklyn Nets. Center Joel Embiid and point guard Tyrese Maxey played pivotal roles in the win.
The successful collaboration between Embiid and Maxey marked a significant achievement in Embiid’s pursuit of an ideal partnership, overcoming previous unsuccessful pairings.
“I think [Maxey] has an even brighter future. Philadelphia’s got a good one. He’s gonna be here for a long time,” Embiid said of Maxey’s assistance.
Maxey has one of the best starts to the current NBA season, averaging 5.3 rebounds, 7.0 assists and 28.4 points per game. The point guard also has a 42.9 percent success rate from 3-point range, 49.3 percent from the field and 94 percent accuracy from the foul line.
Furthermore, Maxey’s improved 5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio is key to the Sixers’ entering this year’s trade deadline with the Embiid-Maxey duo.
Maxey went from an average of five assists from the previous four games to ten assists against Brooklyn, marking his fourth double-digit assist this season.
In collaboration with Sixers’ shooting guard De’Anthony Melton, he contributed 26 points from beyond the arc, leading to an impressive 22/8/5 combination with Embiid’s first-half performance. Maxey made six shots from downtown during the third quarter, where he landed three.
Embiid’s scoring against the Nets increased from an average of 29 points in his previous games to 32 points. This marked his seventh game with over 30 points this season. He also earned 12 rebounds for the Sixers, failing in one ball that would have been his first triple-double since the season’s start.
In Brooklyn, small forward Lonnie Walker IV was one of the Nets’ players with consistent offense throughout the game as his teammates struggled. Walker IV scored nine points in the second quarter, maintaining this progress until the late game when he finished with 26 points — the highest among Brooklyn players during the Sunday game.
