San Francisco 49ers defensive end Chase Young is excited to play against his old team, the Washington Commanders, this Sunday at FedEx Field.
The 49ers got Young in a midseason trade. In seven games, the OSU Buckeyes alumnus recorded 2.5 sacks, a tackle for loss and five hits on quarterbacks.
“They’re definitely a team who’s going to fight to the end. I do know that. So we just got to come out good,” Young said on Wednesday.
The Niners were unbeaten with Young until a recent loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Christmas Day. This year, Young has tallied 22 tackles, with 7.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss and 14 quarterback hits across 14 games for both the Commanders and the 49ers.
Despite the 49ers being favorites against the 4-11 Commanders, Young is not underestimating his former team.
After losing to the Ravens, the 49ers aim to get back on track in its strong 2023 season. They have already secured the NFC West title with 11 wins and four losses and clinched a playoff spot, though there are still three regular-season games left.
49ers linebacker Fred Warner stressed how important every week is, including the upcoming game against the Commanders.
“It is the next one. But given the situation, we obviously know we’ve got to win these next two games to get where we’re trying to go,” said Warner.
In a press conference, QB Brock Purdy, who dealt with a stinger injury in two recent 49ers games, confirmed that he is good to go against the Commanders.
Kyle Shanahan is still facing multiple injuries, notably on the offensive line. Left guard Aaron Banks (toe) and OT Jaylon Moore (concussion) remained absent from practice on Thursday. However, left tackle Trent Williams, who was limited in practice on Wednesday, participated early in the session.
The 49ers’ receiver squad depth is still limited. WR Jauan Jennings remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol without any sign of return, even in a limited capacity.
Ray-Ray McCloud is still on injured reserve due to a rib injury but could return in Week 18 against the Los Angeles Rams.
