The eagerly anticipated featherweight title fight is heading to our screens on July 9. Magsayo caused a massive upset in January by taking out the then champion Gary Russell Junior to take hold of the featherweight belt. And now heâs set to defend the title for the first time since becoming the champ.Â
But Rey Vargas wonât go down without a fight and heâs back to prove that as a former champion, he still has what it takes to be the best.
The fight will be held in San Antonioâin the very same venue in which Manny Pacquiao fought Marco Antonio Barrera. It was the first fight that the young Magsayo ever saw and he credits the bout as being the reason why he took up the sport in the first place.
The more experienced Vargas is 35-0 with 22 wins coming by way of KO. And heâll be looking to add the Filipino to his list of conquests. He was laid off with an injury only to come back stronger than ever to defeat Leonardo Baez back in November in his featherweight debut fight.
He successfully defended his own title 5 times and beat big names like Oscar Negrete and Ronny Rios. And the 5th time he managed to see off the former world champion, Tomoki Kameda.
Vargas has spoken out about the upcoming bout saying that he believes it will be a close match and that the pair will enjoy exciting combat. He was also complimentary about his opponent saying that he recognises his âgreat powerâ but heâs ready for anything that the Filipino has to throw at him.
The fight goes out televised live on Saturday, July 9 and promises to be one of the most exciting fights of the year so far.
