Would single NFL fans choose a Super Bowl win over finding true love?

Ah, February… the month when everyone’s out to score big! Whether it’s on the field during the Super Bowl or with Cupid pulling out all the stops for Valentine’s Day—the game is on! But here’s the million-dollar question: would you rather see your favorite NFL team snag the Lombardi Trophy or (finally) find your one true love? With both the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day coming up, sports platform Wetten.com decided to settle the debate. We asked 2,000 single NFL fans across the country: would you choose the thrill of a winning touchdown or the romance of the gown?

Here’s what we found:

• Nationwide, 48% of single American football fans would rather see their favorite NFL team win the Super Bowl than find their true love.
• Michigan leads all states: 78% of single football fans prefer a Super Bowl win over finding true love.
• Talk about team spirit! Of all the NFL fanbases, Detroit Lions fans take the crown—an incredible 74% would choose a Super Bowl victory over finding their Valentine.
• Women are more likely to swap love for a win—51% would hand their team the Lombardi Trophy over finding love, compared to 46% of men.

Women value a Super Bowl win more than men

As the excitement builds among American football fans across the country, you know what that means: the Super Bowl is almost here! On February 9th, New Orleans will host the ultimate showdown at the Caesars Superdome, and we’ll find out who’ll take over (or keep) the throne from the Kansas City Chiefs and snag that shiny Lombardi Trophy. But wait—just five days later, we’ve got another nerve-racking event: Valentine’s Day! So, what matters more? Watching your team win the Super Bowl (this year or any other) or finding true love? Our study reveals that 48% of single NFL fans would choose a Super Bowl win. And that’s not all… For anyone thinking women are all about love and romance—surprise! A solid 51% of the women surveyed would rather see their team take home the trophy than find their Valentine, compared to 46% of men.

74% of Detroit Lions fans prefer Super Bowl win over love

Even though the Detroit Lions are no longer in the running for the Super Bowl this year, their fans can undoubtedly call themselves the winners when it comes to loyalty. A whopping 74% of single Lions fans say they’d rather see their team win the Super Bowl than find true love. That’s the highest of any NFL fanbase.

While the LA Chargers are also not in the race for the Super Bowl this year, their fans are still dreaming of a win. A solid 60% of Chargers fans without a relationship would choose a Super Bowl victory over meeting their Valentine, making them the second-most dedicated fanbase. Hot on their heels are the Buffalo Bills and Baltimore Ravens supporters, who tied for third with 58%, proving they’ve got love for their team—just not (as much) for Cupid.

New England Patriots fans are the most love-seeking

When it comes to romance, the New England Patriots fans lead the pack. They’d rather find love than see their team win the Super Bowl, with only 22% choosing the win. Understandable—the Patriots, along with the Pittsburgh Steelers, hold the record for the most Super Bowl victories, each with 6 titles. After all those wins, it makes sense that the focus has now shifted to finding love.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers fans are also prioritizing love. Only 29% would rather see their team win the Super Bowl than have Cupid take his shot. That’s the second-lowest percentage. Even though it’s been four years since the Bucs’ last Super Bowl win, their fans don’t seem in a rush.

Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Jaguars have yet to secure a Super Bowl title, and their single fanbase isn’t in any rush to change that. Only 31% would choose a Super Bowl win over finding true love.

In which states should Cupid stay home?

Michigan ranks the highest of all states. A whopping 78% of single NFL fans in Michigan would rather see their favorite team win the Super Bowl than find true love. Despite Michigan’s Detroit Lions being out of the running this year, fans remain optimistic for the years ahead. The same goes for single NFL supporters in Alabama, where 73% would prefer to see their favorite team win rather than find their soulmate. Sharing third place are Kansas and New Mexico, where the percentage stands at 67%.

Methodology

In January 2025, Wetten.com conducted an independent survey of 2,000 American football fans from the United States who were single at the time of participation. They were asked about their current state of residence, which NFL team they support, and whether they would prefer to see their favorite team win the Super Bowl (this year or in a future season) or find their one true love. Of all the respondents, 55% were male, 44% were female, 0.5% identified as non-binary, and 0.5% identified as non-specified. The average age was 38.4 years.
